Carnivore Compatibility Guide

There is no single perfect way to follow carnivore. Our Carnivore Compatibility ratings are here to give you useful information, not to judge you or tell you that your way is wrong.

We use these ratings to help people make informed choices and take steps away from the standard Australian diet. Every positive step counts, and the approach that works for you is the one you can actually follow.

How our ratings work

We rate products from the ingredient list, strictest first. Each product gets the strictest rating its ingredients allow.

Lion

Only beef, lamb or other ruminant products, salt or water, with nothing else added. Plain salt and unflavoured electrolytes are rated Lion too. Think beef tallow, beef organ capsules and plain salt.

Carnivore

Animal foods only, from any animal (pork, poultry, fish, eggs or dairy as well as beef and lamb), plus salt. No plant ingredients, spices, sweeteners or plant oils. Think pork scratchings cooked in their own fat, lard and fish in brine.

Ketovore

Animal-based, with small plant additions such as spices, herbs, vinegar, sweeteners or natural curing agents. No seed oils. Think seasoned biltong, flavoured pork crackle and meat sticks.

Low Carb

Low carb, but made with seed or vegetable oils, or with larger plant ingredients such as nuts, seeds, flours or vegetables.

Unrated

We have not yet confirmed the ingredients or formulation well enough to make a useful call. Unrated does not mean bad, it means we are choosing not to guess.

Our approach

We follow a strict standard for these ratings, but we recognise that people follow different versions of carnivore for different reasons. Some people are starting out, some are removing one food at a time, and others follow a more flexible approach. We do not judge any of that.

If a choice helps you move away from the standard Australian diet and toward the way of eating you want, that is a step in the right direction. Use the rating as a guide, check the ingredients for yourself, and choose what fits your goals.

Our ratings are guidance, not medical advice. Always read the product label and consider your own dietary needs.
